A quantum chemical study of the corrosion inhibition properties of pyridine and its derivatives at the aluminum electrode in hydrochloric acid was carried out. Based on the calculated results the compounds were adsorbed on the metal surface mainly in their protonated forms. The models of the inhibitors adsorption on the Al-surface were optimized with the MNDO method. It is found that the most favorable model is that the inhibitor molecule is adsorbed at the Al-surface in an inclined state, and the electron of the Al-surface is transferred to the inhibitor.
