A biomimetic approach has been investigated and developed for the total synthesis of azonazine, an unusual marine natural cyclopeptide containing a rigid transannular 10-membered ring. A hypervalent iodine-mediated direct oxidative cyclization was successfully developed and applied to construct the highly strained core, which was the key step in the first total synthesis of ent-(-)-azonazine. Based on the physical evidences of synthesized diastereomer and enantiomer of azonazine, both the relative and absolute configurations of the natural product were revised. In this study, we use stereodynamic aluminum biphenolate complexes for quantitative ee and concentration analysis of amino alcohols and alpha-hydroxy acids. An important feature of the tropos biphenolate ligand used is the presence of phenylacetylene antennae for optimal chirality recognition and CD/UV responses at high wavelengths. The complexation-driven chirality amplification yields strong CD signals which allows quantitative chiroptical sensing with good accuracy. We show that aluminate biphenolate sensors can exhibit linear and nonlinear correlations between the induced CD signals and the enantiomeric composition or concentration of the chiral substrate.

This reveals the existence of interactions between unlike molecules, characteristic of alkanol + amine mixtures. Methanol systems show the lowest SCC(0) values due, partially, to size effects. This explains the observed decrease of homocoordination in such solutions in the order: pyridine > 2-methylpyridine > 2,6-dimethylpyridine. Moreover, as the energies of the OH-N hydrogen bonds are practically independent of the pyridine base considered when mixed with methanol, it suggests that size effects are predominant over steric hindrances to the creation of the OH-N hydrogen bonds, which are expected to increase with the number of methyl groups in the aromatic amine. For a given 1-alkanol (?methanol), SCC(0) varies in the sequence: pyridine > methyl pyridine ? 2,6-dimethylpyridine. For alkyl pyridines, stability seems to be independent of position and number of alkyl groups attached to the aromatic ring of the amine. Mixtures with isomeric 2-alkanols show lower heterocoordination, as the hydroxyl group is more sterically hindered than in 1-alkanols.
